About Us

Picture

Flat Tail Press is an educational printmaking studio at Minot State University. In the fall of 2013, faculty in MSU's art department began creating this educational entity that brings students and working artists together to create small, limited edition prints. Through these collaborations, the press will supplement the student’s classroom work through hands-on printing with professional artists. Our hope is that these opportunities will significantly expand students’ art-making knowledge and skills, while developing professional relationships and practices.

Founder & Co-Director: Ryan Stander

Originally from northwest Iowa, I am now going on 8 years in the  plains of North Dakota. My interdisciplinary interests guided my education between art and religion (BA Art, Northwestern College, (IA); MABT, Sioux Falls Seminary; MFA, University of North Dakota). My research attempts to bring theology and the arts into a dynamic conversation. In particular, I am interested in the formative potential of liturgy to shape the sacramental imagination, engage culture, place/space, and the ultimately contemporary visual arts. My artistic media, and preferred processes, are as varied as my other research interests.   My work ranges from Cyanotypes to Lithography which allows me to engage projects with a wide array of possibilities at my fingertips.

Flat Tail Press emerged out of rich experiences in graduate school working together with visiting artists, faculty, fellow graduate students. My hope is that FTP might offer our students similarly formative and memorable experiences.

Co-Director: Micah Bloom

Micah Bloom believed that his voice as Co-Director was equal to his fellow Co-Director, Ryan Stander, but he humbly discovered that his voice is truthfully only one third that of Stander because Ryan is both Founder & Director.  So, in total, his voice counts as 1/3 of the the voices that decide the business of Flat Tail Press at any given FTP director's meeting.  With this .3333 of influence he intends to serve Flat Tail Press with sincerity and loyalty.  Micah is Founder & Director of the The Flat Tail Press Gallery, so there may be a chance  he'll get a word in . . . unless the intern pipes up.
