We are thrilled to welcome Nicole Pietrantoni as FTP’s first guest for Darwin Day on February 13 and14. Nicole is a good friend of MSU Instructor Micah Bloom from their days in the graduate program of University of Iowa. Nicole and FTP will produce “A Glitch in the Matrix: Variation and the Evolving Print.” The project will be a full sheet, CMYK separation screen print. CMYK process is a color printing process with four subtractive colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black). Nicole’s artworks show her unique approach to printmaking often leaning toward installations. She utilizes lights to project images on plexiglass to walls; however, these are very different from the silk-screen project we are working on for Darwin Day. That makes it more exciting to produce silk-screen art pieces with her! We will be printing at 10-12, and 1-3 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Nicole also will presenting a lecture “Spectacular Landscapes: Ghosting the Natural World” at noon in Aleshire Theatre, Hartnett Hall. The lecture will cover the evolution of prints and their changing forms and concepts. Out studios will be open while we are working on the print so please come join us for all the excitement!!!! See her wonderful work here. For those not acquainted with the printmaking world, it can be a confusing one with all the different terminology. FTP's central mission is to help with printmaking education here at MSU and beyond. To that end, we are working on developing our "What Is A Print" tab with helpful information about what printmaking is and the complicated sounding words we use.
We are excited to add a wealth of information in the form of printmaking terms and definitions here. From halftones to litho stones and from touche to rosin...we got you covered. Enjoy! One exhibition goes up today Featuring two thirds of FTPs directors...stay tuned for more photos and such. Getting the chop for our prints was certainly one of the most exciting parts of this semester! Our faithful Graphic Design III students, Tyler & Tia, designed the chop, but until we got the actual embosser, it didn't quite seem real. Many thanks to the Seal King at Southwest Rubber Stamp Company for hooking us up with this fancy little embosser. If you are looking chop, we highly recommend them!
We are well into planning our spring line-up of visiting artists. While several are still in negotiation, I am pleased to announce Kim Fink's visit on February 26-28. Jessica and Ryan are particularly excited because Kim was their printmaking professor in graduate school at the University of North Dakota (and we love his work!). Kim is an experienced artist and educator and has been running Sundog Multiples at UND since he arrived at UND. Please check out his work here. Not to be outdone by our printer friends to the east in Grand Forks, MSU is thankful to receive a "new" Chandler & Price Gordon Jobber letter press. Thanks to a friendship through longtime MSU faculty Walter Piehl, this press was donated to the department. While it needs some work to get it up and running, we are excited about how it might fit into our curriculum and the future of Flat Tail Press. A special thank you to the MSU maintenance department who managed to squeeze it in to Hartnett Hall, up the elevator, and into the printmaking studio! |
